I’ve spent the bulk of my adult life in the food business as a student in cooking school, a chef, in restaurant operations and in food procurement. So I can attest to the accuracy of the crazy, loud cacaphonous milieu that serves, not just as a back drop, but as an active character in Bob Giraldi’s “Dinner Rush.” Giraldi himself is the owner of the restaurant where this movie was filmed. So he knows of what he speaks. The story itself involves bookmaking, addiction to gambling, murder, art, old style cooking versus nouvelle, the chef as star and old courtly values vs new cavalier ones to name a few things. Danny Aiello is the owner, Louis Cropa his son the chef, Udo (Edoardo Ballerino) at a bustling, newly busy restaurant in Tribeca. Udo has recently “saved” the restaurant from extinction and red sauce and meatballs with his new ideas and recipes…or has he? Aiello, with his raspy, quiet voice and his total command of the screen acts as the voice of reason and experience and it is obvious he longs for the old ways and the old times when his wife ran the restaurant and where he good get a plate of sausage and peppers. Stylistically, “Dinner Rush” is more like “The Godfather” than “Casino,” in that, not only was the film shot in beautiful earth tones in middle light (as was “The Godfather”) but, the values put forth are more like those of the 40’s and 50’s than those of the the year 2001. Giraldi seems to be saying: let’s return to a time when life was more clear-cut and simple and Italian food meant red gravy and meatballs and you could tell the bad guys by the shoulder holsters, stick pins and two-toned spectator shoes. Danny Aiello dominates the movie but Edoardo Ballerini, Vivian Wu (Nicole) and Kirk Acevedo (Duncan….late of HBO’s “Oz”) definitely make good impressions. “Dinner Rush” is a call for reason, re-evaluation and a reinstatement of old ways and values….and hey this makes more sense to me every day.

Hard to believe that I have never heard of this movie until I picked it up one night. I like Danny Aiello and I like Mafia type movies. I also like films that revolve mostly around characters and dialogue, as this movie appeared to be just that. So I decided to give it a try. “Dinner Rush” is a highly entertaining film that is both enjoyable and unpredictable.

Owner and bookie Louis Cropa is trying to run a legitimate business. He runs a restaurant and takes great pride in it. However, things get out of hand after his partner is murdered and his chef’s gambling problem attracts some unfriendly gangsters to the restaurant. Not to mention that Cropa’s son is giving him an attitude, being that he’s the head chef and he thinks that he can run the place alone just fine. One thing is for sure, this New York’s busy restaurant is the set-up for one wild and unpredictable night to remember.

I was very impressed by this film, being that I wasn’t sure what to expect. The acting was great by everyone, the movie was shot and done very well, and the story was engaging from start to finish. It is very hard to have a film rely heavily on only characters and dialogue, but this film does it almost perfectly. I guess my only complaint is that it’s a bit short and I think there could’ve been more outrageous things going on, since there are so many characters around and different opportunities at every corner. Still, I was overall very pleased with it all.

The DVD really doesn’t have much to offer, being that it’s not a very big budget film. It’s probably also due to the fact that not many people know this film even exists. The picture and sound quality was really good. Special features included are: both widescreen and fullscreen formats, Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, and a theatrical trailer. There’s also DVD-Rom content, but that I have not tried out. I did enjoy the trailer though; not too revealing, but at the same time wets your appetite.

“Dinner Rush” is a complete joy to watch. Like I said, I love it when movies revolve around characters and dialogue rather than on a complex plot. If you’re looking for a movie with a simple plot, unpredictable situations, and outrageous characters, this might be the perfect choice for you.

I’ve watched both the spotless B&W version with commentary and the dazzling color version of the Universal 3-disc (including CD) edition of “Holiday Inn” and I am very impressed.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Holiday Inn! Click Here

If you haven’t seen the film for a while, the very high points are the song “White Christmas” and its reprise and two of Fred Astaire’s more unforgettable numbers: a solo dance with firecrackers and a falling down drunk number that has to be seen to be believed. But to be fair, all the numbers are memorable, from the classic “You’re Easy to Dance With” to the 18th Century-influenced “I Can’t Tell a Lie” and the blackface hommage to Abraham Lincoln, “Abraham”, one of Irving Berlin’s best “unknown” songs. The two underrated female counterparts (Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale) are also quite nimble and copacetic.

This edition has kept all the extras of the 2006 Special Edition: “A couple of Song and Dance Men”, a 50 min double biography of Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire that has a lot of exciting footage from many of their movies not yet on DVD, hosted by record producer Ken Barnes and Ava Astaire; “All Singing - All Dancing”, a 7 min demonstration of how the dance numbers were filmed and put together (dancing to a pre-recorded soundtrack + live recording of the tapping sound with hidden microphones); a very thorough multiple commentary with input from vintage Crosby and Astaire interviews; and a well-preserved theatrical trailer.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Holiday Inn! Click Here

It also includes a 12-band CD collection of the film’s songs with Crosby and Astaire (from Geffen Records) presented in a cute miniature cardboard 78-RPM sleeve - a genuine collector’s item, and a 7 min making-of docu of the color version with Barry Sandrew.

The Legend Films color version, in my opinion, reaches yet another summit in verisimilitude, the skin tones having been somehow improved upon and the indoor/outdoor sets and costumes being handled with the same level of maniacal authenticity as in “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It actually looks better than a lot of color films of the era and really strives for that saturated Technicolor look, but in a somehow more “relaxed” presentation, as B&W films obviously didn’t have to try as hard to dazzle the eye in every department and every second. Still, I had to gawk and stare at a scene where Astaire is hurriedly packing a tangled bunch of vari-colored neckties, wondering at the complexity of the colorization process involved in such a puny but mind-bogling detail. The whole film - with the nicely contrasting exception of a patriotic B&W documentary montage of the USA’s entry into WWII shown at the Inn - is bathed in the warm glow of intimate indoor lighting alternating with more gaudy flood-lit and heart-stopping dance numbers. You have absolutely no idea what “oomph” means until you’ve seen Virginia Dale’s sequined night-blue dress shimmy and shake in the “You’re Easy To Dance With” number. I found it really hard to come back to the B&W version after that, except for the commentary and the other extras on Disc 1. Yes, I am that shallow.

Both versions are pretty much at the maximum bitrate throughout. The whole experience can only be described as sheer, unadulterated joy and an unparalleled time-travel piece.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment, in association with Legend Films, Inc., honored Bing Crosby on the 31st anniversary of his passing this October 14th by releasing the definitive DVD / CD package of one of Crosby’s most beloved films, Paramount’s mammoth 1942 Irving Berlin musical masterpiece, Holiday Inn.

Universal digitally remastered the classic b/w film for it’s 2006 release, with pristine picture and sound quality. They augmented it with bonus features including a video interview with Fred Astaire’s daughter Ava conducted by Crosby & Astaire record producer Ken Barnes, a making of documentary, and archive audio commentary featuring the stars Bing Crosby & Fred Astaire recorded in the 1970’s.

Now, Universal has gone a step further and made it a 3-disc box set, featuring the original b/w version complete with the bonus features aforementioned, an audio CD housed in a nifty ’40s retro-looking paper sleeve of the commercial soundtrack recordings by Crosby and Astaire, as recorded for Decca Records in 1942 (including Bing’s original hard-to-find 1942 recording of White Christmas), and now, finally, a striking new COLOR version of the film! Legend Films has done justice to this perennial favorite by painstakingly colorizing the film, utilizing the help of Jan Mucklestone, who was the personal sketch artist for Paramount costume designer Edith Head. This was obviously a labor of love, and Legend’s attention to detail makes for a stunning visual.

Colorization has always been a controversial subject, with those for and against it equally passionate in their beliefs. However, colorization has come a LONG way since it’s inception in the early 1980’s. The late 1980’s colorization of another of Bing’s classic films, The Bells of St. Mary’s, was a slop-shod embarrassment enough to turn anyone off to the process. So it was with a bit of apprehension when I first heard of someone daring to tamper with a national treasure like Holiday Inn. I quickly learned that this was different, something special, after viewing Legend Films’ 2007 colorized version of the 1946 Frank Capra masterpiece It’s A Wonderful Life. Then came a small screen video trailer for Holiday Inn on the Legend Films website. This in itself was impressive, but by no means does justice to the brilliance of Legend Films work.

The colors on Holiday Inn are vibrant and full, without being garish or obtrusive. The visual impact is breathtaking, particularly on the Easter Parade number, with Bing’s sea-blue eyes all aglow in the close-up. This is how the film was meant to be seen, in all it’s color glory. After decades of viewing it from grainy b/w prints on the late show, it’s like seeing the film for the very first time! The colors in your mind come to life on the screen, just as you imagine them to be. Bing’s corduroy sport jacket during the White Christmas scene is, as you would expect, a rich shade of beige. The curtain behind Bing during the 4th of July production number is spectacular in red, white and blue, as it should be. Not to mention those firecrackers glowing in orange and red hues during Fred Astaire’s dance-ode to Independence Day! Once you see this film in color, you’ll never want to watch it in b/w again!

You can’t go wrong with this DVD set. Those who prefer the original b/w print, can have it, and those who prefer seeing it in color have that too, all together in one attractive package. It’s a win-win situation. And to all those purists and nay-sayers who are dead-set against the colorization process, give Holiday Inn a chance. If seeing this wonderful film, in all the rainbow of colors each scene portrays, doesn’t change your mind to what colorization can do, then chances are you’d rather not see ANYTHING in color, if it can be viewed in b/w! Bravo Universal Home Entertainment, and Bravo Legend Films! Let’s see more of Crosby’s classic films done up right in color!

Seeing as how quite a few of the online reviews for this particular DVD are quite hard to read, I shall provide you with brilliant (and metaphorical) insight to the wonder that is Zim.

I remember seeing the commercials for Zim on Nickelodeon and thinking that this is something worth seeing. Sadly, I didn’t get around to watching it until Nanozim came out, and I was officially hooked.

I can sum up the wonder of this series in one word: screaming.

All of the voice actors and actresses in this show scream at the top of their lungs. And it’s a proven fact that the public likes screaming.

With brilliant colors and quirky animation, this show is sure to keep the interest of people with the shortest attention spans. Being one of those people, I can vouch for that.

The reason I’m excited about this particular set…

Well, actually, there are several reasons:

1) Commentary on most of my favorite episodes. Please do not miss out on this! I never laughed so hard in my life. Jhonen has to be one of the funniest and most charming cartoonists on Earth right now. Please… please hit that button on your remote and listen to the freakin’ commentary.

2) This brings us closer to the unaired episodes!

I’ve had the privilege of seeing a few of the unaired eps and I have to say, the writing is wittier, the colors are brighter, and the acting is doomier and squishier. (Those are positive adjectives, by the way).

3) High quality versions of the all the episodes that were so horribly broadcasted on cable television.

4) Extras! Extras! And more extras!

5) At such a cheap price, it feels like I’m stealing it.

I also believe that the second volume of this series starts with Plague of Babies and goes on through until it stops at walk For Your Lives. This pleases me greatly, as some of the best episodes were towards the end of the first season.

That’s all I have to say about this DVD.

The volume practically sells itself.

And it wins a box of adhesive medical strips.

Trying to bid or buy for the series by the season can be very costly and time consuming, to say nothing of aggravating. I purchased this set recently and am very pleased! It is compact with all the discs housed in one box. The quality of the discs are excellent and I only noted a slightly hollow, echoing sound on a couple of the episodes. The color is excellent and I’m not seeing any of the graininess I’ve seen on a couple of the TV series I’ve purchased in the past. The only drawback is that all the discs are stacked upon one another in a plastic case. A little tender loving care will prevent scratches. An excellent buy for the money!

I think that this show is great, I’m turning 21 soon and I love it! I would give the series 5 stars because it’s funny, entertaining and takes me back to a time when I wasn’t even born! I give this particular set 4 stars mostly because of the packaging (the box the dvd’s are stored in). All of the dvd’s are stacked on top of one another with nothing to divide them which means you have to treat them very well in order to keep them safe and clean. The disc are stacked on top of one another and if you watch disc one, finish it and want to watch disc 5 then you have to remove disc 1 through 4 to get to five. The show is great if you like sit coms about African American families scratchin and survivin! Overall I am pleased with the set and would recommend it if you really love the show and want it at an affordable price.

NEW INFORMATION: A recent reviewer asked about whether or not to return the discs from this DVD set to the Disney Company for the corrected discs.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Walt Disney Treasures - More Silly Symphonies! Click Here

I personally decided to return my original discs for the corrected ones for several reasons. ONE - the title cards (which list the title of the cartoons) had been recreated for this DVD release but “someone” in the production process didn’t do their job and didn’t attach these recreations to the cartoons. For me, this is a relatively minor reason to get replacement discs. TWO - The 1934 cartoon “The Goddess Of Spring” in this DVD release is a poorer quality copy. This cartoon was digitally restored and was included as an extra on the last Snow White DVD release. I have this cartoon in the nicer quality on that Snow White DVD so this is still a relativey minor reason to get the replacement discs. THREE - The 1933 cartoon “The Night Before Christmas” is included incomplete on this release. A short scene of black stereotyped toys in a parade are left out of the cartoon. I want the full uncensored cartoon so this is the MAJOR reason I returned my discs for the corrected discs. These newer discs are supposed to have all the above problems corrected.

Those reasons should give you, the customer, the information on whether you want to exchange your original discs for the replacement discs. As the other reviewer stated - you can call 1-800-723-4763 in the U.S. or 1-888-877-2843 in Canada. Tell the Disney customer service representative that you are interested in exchanging your More Silly Symphonies discs for the corrected discs.

By the way, I got the set when it was first released in December 2006 and I love the quality of the cartoons. Except for the relatively minor oops listed above, this is a fantastic quality collection - one I will treasure (along with all the other Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets) the rest of my life!!! There are hours and hours of fun cartoons and nice animation on this set!!

OLD INFORMATION:

One reviewer expressed concern that all the remaining Silly Symphony cartoons would be in this DVD release. Leonard Maltin, who was involved in producing these Walt Disney Treasures DVD sets, has stated that all the remaining Silly Symphony cartoons will be in this set. Here’s the list of the 38 cartoons not included in the first Silly Symphony Treasures set that should be in this set.

1. Arctic Antics (1930)

2. Autumn (1930)

3. The Bears And The Bees (1932)

4. The Bird Store (1932)

5. Birds In The Spring (1933)

6. Broken Toys (1935)

7. Bugs In Love (1932)

8. Cannibal Capers (1930)

9. The Cat’s Out (Also known as The Cat’s Nightmare) (1931)

10. The China Shop (1934)

11. The Clock Store (1931)

12. Cock O’ The Walk (1935)

13. El Terrible Toreador (1929)

14. The Fox Hunt (1931)

15. Frolicking Fish (1930)

16. The Goddess Of Spring (1934)

17. Hell’s Bells (1929)

18. King Neptune (1932)

19. Little Hiawatha (1937)

20. Merbabies (1938)

21. The Merry Dwarfs (1929)

22. Midnight In A Toy Shop (1930)

23. Monkey Melodies (1930)

24. More Kittens (1936)

25. The Moth And The Flame (1938)

26. Mother Goose Goes Hollywood (1938)

27. Night (1930)

28. The Night Before Christmas (1933)

29. Old King Cole (1933)

30. The Pied Piper (1933)

31. Playful Pan (1930)

32. Santa’s Workshop (1932)

33. The Spider And The Fly ((1931)

34. Springtime (1929)

35. Summer (1930)

36. Three Blind Mouseketeers (1936)

37. Three Orphan Kittens (1935)

38. Winter (1930)

As happened in the first Treasures set of the Silly Symphony cartoons, some of the more controversial cartoons might be found only in an Easter Egg. “Who Killed Cock Robin?” is an example from the first set.

These last Silly Symphonies are among Disney’s rarest, most interesting, and most entertaining cartoons. Some of them contain some fascinating experimental animation.

I very much look forward to watching these at DVD quality.

Hi, I just found this information on the Walt Disney Treasures website.

WALT DISNEY TREASURES: MORE SILLY SYMPHONIES

In an effort to present the classic cartoons contained on MORE SILLY SYMPHONIES as originally intended, Walt Disney Studio recently recreated the original title cards that were to appear at the start of each film. Due to a production error, these restored cards were inadvertently not included on this new DVD collection. We sincerely apologize for this mistake, and are currently working to rectify the issue. Please check back for an update as to when the replacement discs will be ready. We anticipate them sometime in early March.

If you have purchased MORE SILLY SYMPHONIES and would like to have them replaced with the corrected DVDs, call 1-800-723-4763 (U.S.)/1-888-877-2843 (Canada). Please note, you will receive replacement discs, not replacement packaging. Please hold on to your current packaging.

I just bought this DVD because I really like classic cartoons, but I’m not a collector so I don’t really understand what was the mistake and if I should exchange them.

Thanks!

Michael Moore is a very unique individual,film-maker,and writer. Not because of what he believes in, as I am sure there are millions out there who share these beliefs(his chart topping books and films attest to that),it is rather because of his more than a decade long unrelenting dedication to get his message through to as many viewers and readers as he possibly can, with a rare sense purpose, irony, and poignant sarcasm.
He is concerned about many issues that he finds are wrong with American society, from guns, corrupt politicians, greedy corporations and unfounded or distorted myths about minorities be it African Americans or gays.
The Awful Truth is his successful TV series, produced for UK’s channel 4, and in which not only he addresses yet again the issues he feels so strongly about, but most importantly and this is vital, he CONFRONTS them as well in any way he feels possible,of course all dressed up nicely in his unwavering humour.
I see Michael Moore as a sort of modern day Robin Hood, for although he does not steal from the rich to give to the poor,he rather exposes, embarasses the priviledged few and present it to the ordinary man and woman. For example the episode where he tries to help the illegal Mexicans who were about to be deported because the hotel they worked for informed the INS on them after they formed a union (and not before!) and succeeding in not only keeping the illegals in the country after petitions, but getting his own back at the hotel for violation of health and building codes, this was a triumph for the underdog against the double standards and exploitation they faced.
Or the episode where he stages a fake funeral for a dying man who needs a life saving transplant his insurance company refuses to pay for, while exposing the huge profits that company made. When the comapny finally agrees to cover the operation and the patient in the audience greets Moore with tears in his eyes, this too is a huge triumph.
In this sense I see him as a modern Robin Hood.
Awful is the last word to describe this wonderful series..It will make you laugh your head off, while opening your eyes and thinking..hard..

First, I just want to say that I tend to be politically conservative, but I usually enjoy Michael Moore’s work for what it is - entertainment engineered with a political slant. It’s nothing more and nothing less than that.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Awful Truth - The Complete DVD Set! Click Here

That said, these reviews should be for Michael Moore’s show “The Awful Truth”. I have watched almost all of these episodes for the show’s two year run. The first year’s shows were shot before a live audience and you can hear the audience laughing at Moore’s clips. The second year of shows were filmed in Times Square with no audience. The episodes for the first year were more humorous, with the majority of the clips focused on corporate issues and crooks. Highlights include a group of people who had lost their voice boxes to cancer from smoking singing Christmas carols to tabacco companies and their lobbyists, Moore’s trek to many Manpower temporary offices to see how the employees would react to his visit (since Moore got his hands on an internal memo from Manpower instructing employees how to deal with Moore if he showed up to their offices) and the adventures of Crackers the Crime Fighting Chicken at Disney World. There were many enjoyable moments in the first season of shows.

The second season, maybe because there is no audience, seems much, much darker than the first. Not a lot of laughs in the second year. As an example, a story is done about a healthcare facility that had been fined for poor care of the elderly. One of Moore’s reporters gets a group of elderly folks together and takes them to a martial arts instructor for lessons. The newly trained elderly martial arts masters are then taken to the offices of said healthcare provider to show them what they can expect if they ever try to mistreat older people in the future. And we are treated to a display of 75+ year old people trying to do punches and leg kicks. It was actually so ridiculous that it was painful to watch. There’s many more misses than hits in year two, which probably explains why there was no year three.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Awful Truth - The Complete DVD Set! Click Here

I would recommend the first year of shows for anybody who enjoys a little over-the-top political and corporate humor. The second year is a little harder to recommend. It just isn’t that funny, in general.

This a great movie. I saw it when it first came out in 1991 and have liked it ever since. It has a bittersweet storyline about a little girl, and her adoptive father who start out by trying to con a single, rich divorce lawyer out of funds, and end up building a family relationship with her. They teach her what it means to have a family and that there are things beyond money and work. She in turn shows them what having a home can really be like. The story is a timeless mix of comedy and drama. Sad and dark and times, and happy at others, it tells a realistic story of what it might be like to be homeless and parentless. Recommended for adults and kids 9 and up.

“When somebody gives you something to remember them by it means they are going to take off. If they are going to stick around you don’t have to have anything to remember them by because they will be there.” - Curly Sue

Curly Sue is one of those goose bumps, feel-good, heartwarming movies. While it has its moments of comedy, it is not one of those rolling on the floor laughing out loud movies. It’s about a homeless man (John Belushi) who has taken care of this orphan girl, Curly Sue (Alisan Porter) since her birth on meager means, that is until they cross the path of an attorney (Kelly Lynch) who dares to care for this little girl and Bill (John Belushi). It’s an incredible story full of compassion that is sure to warm your heart during the holidays or anytime of the year. Full of warmth, honesty and a kick of humor you are sure to fall in love with Curly Sue. This movie is a definite see for any movie lover.

The Brave One was beautifully crafted in 1957 by blacklisted author Robert Rich and immediately established itself as a superb classic. The tale is of a small Mexican boy and his enduring love for his courageous pet bull. Set in Mexico, a boy discovers a cow has been killed after delivering and orphaning a male offspring. Naming the calf Gitano, The boy becomes it’s friend and caretaker. Realizing the boy’s loneliness, the parents encourage the bond, but fail to emphasis the eventual fate of the animal. Throughout the Calf’s life the boy’s love inexorably grows unaware of his parent’s financial responsibility to the bull’s true owner. By the time the animal has grown to market size and becomes a cash commodity, the boy’s parents are torn between their son’s love and their duty to the Patrone. Using subterfuge, the parents separate the two. Returning from a fool’s errand, the boy discovers his best friend and lifetime companion has been sold for the purpose of bull fighting and its eventual destruction. Despite the frantic warnings of his parents that it’s too late to save the animal, the small boy adroitly played by Michel Rey, sets off to save his courageous friend from certain death. The boy visits everyone from the Patrone to the Governnor of Mexico in a vain attempt to alter the fate of his pet. The film culminates with the boy’s magnificent bravery before an arena filled with spectators. True loyalty to any animal has never had a more poignant test of love and courage. For any viewer with a human heart, this tear-wrenching film will leave you joyfully weeping. ****

This is the best family-type film dealing with the sometimes controversial subject of bullfighting. The photography, score and story are all first class even though some parts seem dated from a 2006 perspective. Well worth having in your video library.

Not everyone watches the show when it airs, and if you’re one of those people or if you’d just like to know what’s on the discs, then this review is for you.

First, let me just say that I absolutely loved the finale. I also believe that the final half of season four was perhaps the strongest of the series (definitely the bleakest). This show had always been a drama with a scifi setting, and while some folks didn’t like the fact that it became much more dialogue driven and less focused on action, I loved it. There are ten episodes (finale being a three-parter, but aired as two episodes, so you could say 11 episodes) spread across 3 discs. Here’s a breakdown of the EXTRAS on each disc with my opinion of what’s useful and what could have been airlocked.

Disc One:

“The Journey Ends: The Arrival” is a look back at the series with the cast and crew. Worth watching.

“What the Frak is Going On With Battlestar Galactica” is a quick 8-minute summary of the show through the first 3 seasons. It’s concise and hilarious.

“A Disquiet Follows My Soul Unaired Extended Episode.” Better than the broadcast version, and definitely the version I’d recommend.

“Evolution of a Cue” is a behind-the-scenes look at composer Bear McCreary’s creation of music for a specific scene (with Roslin). It’s incredibly detailed and if you’re a fan of the music on BSG, I couldn’t recommend this one enough. Actually, even if you’re not a fan of the music it’s still very interesting.

Disc Two:

“David Eick’s Video Blogs” is a collection of 11 3-5 minute video diaries with the cast and crew covering a range of topics. Some are funny and some are just fun to watch. Definitely worth watching.

“Islanded in a Stream of Stars Unaired Extended Episode.” Much better than the broadcast version. I wasn’t a huge fan of this episode when it originally aired, but this extended version definitely fleshes out the story a lot better and also fills in a few gaps.

Disc Three:

“A Look Back” is another collection of videos(6) with the cast and crew. Not repetitive in the least, this is also well worth watching.

“…And They Have A Plan” is a quick 4-5 minute sneak peek at what the upcoming movie, “The Plan” is all about.

“The Musicians Behind Daybreak.” Bear McCreary is again on-hand to discuss what went into creating the epic score for the finale. Even better, we’re introduced to the various musicians (and their instruments) who have worked on the score from the very beginning. And once again, this one comes HIGHLY recommended.

“Daybreak Unaired Extended Episode.” The finale the way it was meant to be seen. This contains all three parts, and along with extra scenes, it was also re-edited a bit. I highly recommend watching this and forgoing the broadcast version.

Across all discs you’ll find deleted scenes (some are very interesting while some are just filler that should have been deleted, and they are presented in SD), audio and podcast commentaries (they’re all worth a listen), along with U-Control. U-Control is an interactive feature that offers little facts about the show/characters which you can access as you watch an episode. Frankly, I found it completely useless. I haven’t tried the BD-Live content as yet.

It should be noted that you should watch the entire series before watching any of the extras because they do contain massive spoilers.

There is, however, one glaring omission from this box-set: “The Face Of The Enemy” webisodes. While they are available elsewhere online, they should have been included in this set. They answer a question or two (from season 3) and greatly flesh out a certain character’s motivations in these final episodes. I’d recommend finding and watching them before watching the episode, “The Oath.” While this exclusion is noteworthy, the strength of the rest of the content in this set more than makes up for it. And perhaps we could see them available through BD-Live one day?

Visually, BSG looks gorgeous on Blu. You do notice the intentional grain a bit more at times, but colors pop and lines are well defined (CGI looks better as well). On the audio side, the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is simply fantastic. Technically, this set is remarkable.

If you’ve come along for the ride this far, there’s absolutely no reason to not pick up this final half-season to see how this story ends. However, as to be expected, the finale won’t please everyone. Whether or not you like it, at least we were given a proper conclusion, which is a rarity in today’s television landscape. They told the story they wanted to tell, and left it up to their audience to decide…and that’s exactly what I did.

A wonderful conclusion to the best show to ever grace our television screens.

This is the reason the BluRay goes for LESS now on Amazon than the DVD!

I was so excited to see BG on BluRay, I was disappointed I had already purchased too many seasons on DVD to justify getting the entire series on Bluray, so this was my only option to get a season I didn’t have. (Although other seasons look GREAT when the DVD version is Upscaled!!)

Oh my God I was so disappointed with the BluRay :( I don’t know where to start.

The beginning…I put the first Disk in the player and waited with anticipation for the splash screen. It came up..Crystal clear digital lettering, a nice interface. But in the side window, the worst, ugliest video played. It was like looking at 2 different standards. I thought, “My God its like watching a TV station from 100 miles away”. The picture was grainy, the colors washed out, it had static. Is this the look they were going for? It made no sense.

I tried playing an episode.

Oh Great, every time you play an episode, Moore has to pop his head up again giving you his 10 minute dissertation on how great this is going to look. HE is digitally clear, bright and the color saturation is perfect!

Then the episode starts. GRAINY, WASHED OUT, TINTED. I tried it in the BluRay and the PS3…Same thing. I wanted to give Moore a slap on his face for the incessant boasting!

I decided there must be a problem with my setup. So I took it to BestBuy. They told me it had to be my $5 HDMI cable. But it looked exactly the same on their $50 Dynex cable (who pays $50 for Dynex anything?) Even their better cables, same thing! Even they had to admit, it wasn’t pretty! I thpought he was joking in the commentary, but now I think it actaully was shot with a Retail Store cam.

That is just part of the problem. As I mentioned before this irritating intro by Moore comes up every time you do something with the disk. And its like he is laughing at you for being a sucker and paying the extra 10 bucks or more. He should be apologizing!

Also, when you are watching an episode and you realize you have seen this one already, you can’t exit to the main menu. I had to reboot the disk on the Sharp player and the PS3. You are trapped in the episode! Sometimes it just goes blank at the end of the episode and the player can’t even shut down. I never had that happen with any other BluRay.

With all this, I won’t even go into his wife’s babbling and child worship on the commentary track. That one kid of their’s should be named PatPat (I swear its the kid version of the guy from Sat. Night Live. Somebody get this kid a nutritionist…please!). And I don’t have much appreciation for Moore’s cursing on the commentary either. Just doesn’t add anything to the content for me.

I will admit, One of the main reasons I wanted to see this movie was because of the buzz about it being one of the most sexually explicit movies ever made in the non-porn industry. I didn’t really expect to find the movie interesting, I just wanted to see what everyone was talking about.

The first minute or so was nothing but explicit sex and I almost turned the movie off thinking it was going to be pointless, that this was all there was to the movie, but I had nothing better to do so I kept watching.

This movie is not porn, nor is it erotica. This movie IS an uncensored look at the truth about love and sex, and is probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is brutally honest, thought provoking, intense at times, and funny at others. These are characters that we can relate to, because they are real.

I can not say enough positive things about this movie, it is art, it is truth, it is exceptional.

It will definitely be a part of my DVD collection.

Strange as it seems, I watched “This Film is Not Yet Rated” and “Shortbus” in the same day. And some part of me wondered … did John Cameron Mitchell even bother to submit this to the MPAA? Not, of course, because he expected to receive a “passing-grade” from the prudish parents (and the two members of the clergy) that run the ratings and appeals board … but simply to force the cloistered collection of puritans to watch couples attempting to negotiate their sexuality.

The fantastic ensemble cast is phenomenal at arousing laughter, compassion, and perhaps a few tears. Moreover, in a weird way, watching Sofia navigate the Shortbus haven is kind of like a return to high-school parties: everyone is making out, someone is crying in the closet, a couple of people are watching television, a group of desperate goofs are playing “spin the bottle,” and your boyfriend (or girlfriend) is bored. Ohh, and you never leave very satisfied:)

What surprised me was how this film could have been painfully predictable, but was not. For instance, in the film’s introduction, Sophia expresses that she has never climaxed with her husband. When she explores Shortbus, she meets Severin (a tortured dominatrix). When the two women bond and become intimate, the viewer is convinced that satisfaction will come from another woman. Not so (thank goodness!). In fact, she is betrayed by Severin’s greedy lust. This is an unexpected, painful, and realistic turn for the film. I applaud the fact the Mitchell complicates sex … there are no easy answers for Mitchell (Thank you!!)

Unlike some of the reviewers here, I do not think “less is more.” We have lived with “less is more” for way too long. We Americans think sex is shameful … and if any films include it, they better be hidden in back rooms … behind ugly beaded curtains. These films invariably degrade both sexes and they degrade sex itself. This film shows Americans loving-couples (in many cases real-life couples) engaging in consensual sex. It illustrates the complications and beauty of these relationships. Never does it condescend. Instead, it graceful allows its viewers to become welcomed voyeurs … we learn as we watch. We experience the joy and frustration of these characters. It is … quite marvelous.

If you are tired of films that ignore the pleasures of sex for women (ignore, or as we learn from “This Film is Not Yet Rated,” simply are not permitted to show WOMEN enjoying sex), if you are searching for a film which treats the sex-life of gay men with playfulness and respect, if you are desperate for a film which makes sex “sexy,” messy, and complicated, then give Shortbus your attention.

But if films with gay men pleasuring each other and women finding pleasure at all, turn you off … well, you may as well return to the area behind the beaded curtain. The rest of us will hope that Mitchell continues to build upon his ground-breaking works!

Thank you, Mr. Mitchell!
